Normal sexual process involves interaction involving both the mind (thoughts, memories and emotions) as well as the body (the nervous, circulatory and endocrine (hormonal) systems) all interact with the mind to produce a sexual response. A delicate and balanced interaction amongst all parts of the nervous system is responsible for the sexual response in men.

Sex drive (also known as desire or libido) is the wanting of your body to engage in sexual activity. These can be triggered by any of your senses including thoughts. The first stage of the sexual response cycle is excitement, once you have desire you then move on to this stage. It is during this excitement stage, that blood flow to the penis increases, leading to an erection. Also during this stage, there's a noticeable increase in muscle tension throughout the body. As this stage progresses, excitement and muscle tension are maintained throughout and intensified. The peak or climax (as we call it) is the highest point of the excitement stage is known as an orgasm. Once achieved, muscle tension all throughout the body will further increase. As the pelvic muscles in the man contract semen is most often released (not always), this is known as ejaculation. semen is usually, but not always, ejaculated. In most cases, ejaculation and orgasm happen at the same time but, if are taken drugs such as antidepressants or have undergone puberty they may not have an ejaculation. Once the peak or climax is completed, the man then returns to his regular non-sexual excited state. At this time there is was is called refractory period where a man cannot have an erection, this time can vary from anywhere from 20 minutes to days depending on your age and your health. As one gets older this refractory period time usually gets longer.
