In my opinion, pushups are the single most effective exercise for improving total body fitness. They offer the benefits of weight lifting, stretching and cardio vascular training all in one exercise. For a beginner, pushups can be very difficult because of how many muscles are involved. Many of which are under trained in the body of a beginner. In fact, even many seasoned bench press veterans have trouble doing high-rep pushup workouts because their secondary and stabilizer muscles are untrained.

Holding the proper form is a great exercise alone, without even performing any repetitions. The pushup form benefits the abdominal muscles in the same way that Arnold Presses benefit the biceps, by simultaneously flexing and stretching. When the lower back muscles contract to stabilize your form, your abdominal muscles are inadvertently stretched. The quadriceps is also relied on heavily to maintain proper form, giving your legs a decent secondary workout.

The actual motion of a pushup trains the chest, triceps and the anterior deltoids, while stretching the biceps and back. Pushups are considered by many people to be the best all-around chest workout. I have found that they are great at increasing muscle size and tone. I have also found that they are easier on the joints than the bench press. Additionally, large pushup workouts are great for circulation and overall cardiovascular health.

When performed in high-repetition workouts, pushups can increase human growth hormone, boosting overall muscle growth. This is the hidden benefit of pushups that many people never discover because they only perform pushups as a supplemental exercise, rather than as a primary chest workout. My article entitled, "Do Pushups to Build Muscle Mass and Boost Metabolism," details how to build up your strength and endurance to completing a 1000-pushup routine. If you plan to use pushups as a primary chest exercise, then I encourage you to perform a lot of sets and reps, and set a goal of completing between 500 and 1000 pushups. Pushups are much more challenging and painful than a standard bench press, but if you commit yourself to them, you can have amazing results.

Push-ups for women are also a great exercise. Women are often told not to do anything to buff up. It takes time to get the right form, and then perform sets of push-ups. I'm nowhere near 1000, but I have lost more weight doing push-ups and jogging than anything else. I'm getting ready for the police officer test. Great article by the way.

I have begun a very strict push-up routine. In the month of February 2010, I completed 2,780 push-ups. I do my push-ups in six phases and at the end of the month, calculate what I did. The results show and the show well!

This is great info. A few months ago I started following a 100 push ups routine and improved to 100 nonstop pushups, I had been doing pushups for years just not with the same intensity. After that I started doing 3 set of 100 or pumping sets of 100, 75, & 50 between miles on a 3 mile run/jog. I have to say I believe they are great. I've worked up to 1000 a day but i've only done that 3 or 4 times. Sometimes I jumble 400 together in about 15 minutes. I lift weights just a little bit, almost like a supplement. i must say i have seen a difference in my torso. I've always had problems seeing a difference because of my diet (red meat, fried foods, starches, lots and lots of beer, etc.) but I see where push ups a primo. I encourage anyone to at least include them in whatever plan for fitness they assign themselves too.

I've quit lifting weights and started focusing on pushups, pullups crunches and bridges( I cycle for legs). I've worked out for over 40 years.. I've dropped 14 lbs. and look so much more toned and cut.. Our son plays water polo and says I look better now, similar to a water polo player. I'm 56 with a 33" waist and now weight 171 at 5'9". Blood pressure etc. is excellent. Pushups to me are by far the best exercise to do. I do them every other day and usually sets of 15 on the navy seal pushup bars that rotate. Usually sets of 15 and 5 sets.. I tried doing them ever day,but I felt as though I was over training and the results were not the same as every other day.. Great website!

Wow, 1000 pushups?!? Really? That's like, crazy. The best i could do right now, and I would probably be dead if I did would be 100, but i usually do only up to 50 at a time; usually less.
