In the summer of 2007, Sara Bareilles had a lock on the radio waves with her bubbly tune "Love Song." Radio stations were playing it nonstop, digital downloads were burning up the information superhighway, it was an iTunes download of the day, it was honored by being a featured song for Starbucks. It was featured in a Rhapsody commercial. Bareilles played it on the Late Late Show among many other shows. It seemed as if everyone and their brother was shouting out, "I'm not gonna write you a love song 'cause you asked for it 'cause you need one, you see."

So, where did this this catchy song come from? A terminated relationship, a broken heart?

No, the explanation is actually quite a bit more funny than that.

Believe it or not, the lyric is actually directed at her record label! She penned the lyric to tell about her unhappiness with the label for pressuring her to focus on more typically radio-friendly pop material. It's really the oldest scenario, actually. A company brings an artist on board because they have that "je ne sais quoi" that sets them apart from all the others, and then begins to push them to change - to change to become like all the others.

I don't think they're resentful of Sara now, however. The musical pressure that she penned in "Love Song" has generated them a ton of song purchases, and through that a ton of money. If all songwriters could generate that much capital slamming them, I'm pretty sure they would not have a problem with it.

In actuality, they might even create arguments just to instigate it!

As it stands however, Sara B stays the only songwriter on the summer charts to have a hit that�s about conflict, not with a lover or an ex-lover, but with a giant company.

And I'm pretty sure it's a record that�s most likely going to stand.
