As we all know (or most of us), nowadays our physical appearance has become the main factor that is taken in consideration when we come in contact with people. Unfortunately, for many people it's the way we look physically and not who we are as human beings that's more important. This problem is even more evident among teenagers. Physical appearance is something that, without doubt, places a lot of pressure on teens and continues to affect them as they grow to become adults. And this importance of "physical appearance" takes on a whole new level when a person suffers from a physically altering condition such as acne.
Acne is one of the most widespread physical skin conditions that affects not only teens but adults as well. There are many different types of acne, and although there are also many different treatments that have been developed to fight acne, there's still the need to find a definitive cure for it. However, aside from treating the physical appearance caused by acne, there's something worst that's caused by this horrible skin disorder. What happens when people suffering from acne is affected psychologically, and may shy away from attending social events with friends or colleagues because of how it makes them feel? How could they cope with that!
Again, this is a problem that can become even stronger among teens. The reason for this is that as teens are still developing a strong sense of who they are, the experience of being neglected could become a very important turning point that will certainly affect who they turn out to be as adults. But it does not stop there. It has been reported that many adults feel the same psychological effects of acne, and say it makes them feel ugly and undesirable in appearance.
Some studies have shown that psychological effects of such conditions can lead to depression, eating disorders, and social anxiety. And while this often starts during adolescence, these psychological effects can carry over as adults, resulting in even more serious psychological problems. So, is there anything that can be done to prevent this from occurring?
Well, there are some things acne sufferers do to try to cope with possible psychological problems. Many acne sufferers seek coverage that will hide their acne, usually in the form of a cream concealer or makeup. These products can be purchased over-the-counter, and do a good job covering up most mild to moderate acne. For more severe cases however, a doctor can prescribe something to conceal this condition.
Also, even though it has been reported that diet plays but a small role in the causes of acne, there may be certain foods that influence breakouts. If you are one who feels this may be affecting your acne, the best recommended tip is to stay away from those foods that seem to be causing the problem, and see if that helps you. It is considered that diet could play a larger role in adult acne than in teen acne, so it doesn't hurt to start early.
Another factor that may play a role in self-esteem, especially in teens, is the misconception that acne is caused by having unclean skin. While this isn't true, it could cause acne sufferers to become more anxious about how others view them, which can cause self-esteem to drop.
Something you should keep in mind is that in order to feel better about yourself you first need to feel better about your acne. And in order to accomplish the latter, you must treat your acne of course. This may be something you can do on your own, or it may require the help of a physician. Either way, try to find a treatment that works for you. If you are feeling anxious and depressed about your condition, feel free to talk to your doctor about these feelings and what you can do to alleviate them. Even if you aren't sure, it can be a good idea to seek medical attention for your acne. And even if prescription medications aren't necessary, a doctor can help you find a treatment that works best for you, and you will be on your way to recovery.
Another reason to see a doctor is that, as we mentioned earlier, teens who suffer from acne early on can usually expect it to worsen as they get older, and even continue on into adulthood. This could certainly lead to more severe types of acne. Therefore, the sooner you seek medical attention, the chances of you suffering of worst physical effects like acne scarring will be minimum. And this undoubtedly could mean even greater psychological effects.
