Having to take prescription medications for a mental illness can be one of the hardest things to do. There are costs, side effects, health risks, fighting with insurance companies, and many other downsides. Of course, when you have a medical professional in front of you telling you that you have "insert disease here" it’s very hard not to believe them, they are professionals after all. However, they are also quick to diagnose as many Western doctors are and will quickly put you on some sort of medication to "neutralize the problem."

But what if you don’t want to have to take a pill every day for the rest of your life to "be normal?" There are several solutions available although each will be hard to face in it’s own way. One could continue to spend the money on the prescription medication and ignore the nagging thought in the back of their head that says "I don’t want to keep doing this" or one could simply stop taking the medications.

You may be thinking to yourself, aren’t there risks associated with not taking the medication? Will it be rough on my body and mind if I just stop taking the medication cold turkey. Of course it will be very difficult to stop taking the medication if not dangerous to one’s health. Searching for a proper medical detox program can help take care of the health risks. They will put you on a routine to ensure that you are safely and successfully taken off medication before returning back to your everyday life.

This may be hard for some but think of it as a vacation for you. It’s almost like going to a spa where you are taking some "me time" to relax. After all you are working on yourself as well as your future. The medications are not doing anything positive for your body as well as your mind. Think of detoxing as investing in your future.

There is also a cost issue involved, but that can be addressed and solutions can be found. After all you are spending an arm and a leg on prescription medications already, think of how much money you could save if you weren’t taking them any longer. One’s life is worth more than the cost of a detox program and the joy given back after successfully leaving prescription medications behind is priceless.

The journey will not be an easy one but then again nothing in life that is worth doing is ever easy. There will be bad days and there will be good days but every day will be one day closer to getting back your life for good. The bad days will help build character as will the good and a greater appreciation for life can be found.

Granted some medications are useful, such as those that help keep down one’s blood pressure or help with a weak heart but when it comes to medications that help one from being depressed or having too much energy the medications are truly robbing an individual of their own individuality. Hyper individuals can get a lot of work done when they focus in on a project. Depressed individuals may have a better understanding of what is truly good in the world. Do you really want to take medications for the rest of your life or would you rather be yourself?

There are alternatives to medications. Two great resources are the Alternative To Meds Center and the Fresh Start Program
