When the weather is hot outside, you want to have at least one room in your home that you can go to that is cool. Even if you have central air conditioning, having an inexpensive air conditioner unit can save you hundreds of dollars on your electricity bill every year by keeping the central air off and running an air conditioning unit instead.
Knowing how to buy an inexpensive air condition unit requires some basic knowledge about these units and knowing what your personal needs are. To start, it is important to determine whether you plan to leave the unit in one room or take it from room to room. If you plan to use it in more than one room, you will need a window bracket on each window where the unit will be placed. A lightweight unit will also be easier to lift when moving from area to area.
Take measurements of the size of the room or rooms you plan to have the unit in. This will help you to pick a unit that will adequately cool the entire room. Determine the room measure in square feet. Another factor you need to determine is the amount of voltage you can safely load near the window. In some apartments, there is a voltage limit you cannot exceed. In some homes, running an air condition unit of high voltage improperly in an outlet can cause a fuse to blow.
Some air conditioning units require charcoal filters and antibacterial filters. Take the time to do some research on units before you go to the sales floor. Many sales people work on a commission basis and may have knowledge but their salary depends on up selling you the most expensive air conditioning unit they can. When you go to the store informed and prepared, you can make a better decision.
Remember that no matter how small or portable your air condition unit is, it will require some maintenance and upkeep like any other HVAC appliance. It will be least expensive to do this maintenance yourself but if you do not feel inclined, take the time to choose a unit that will require minimal maintenance as this can offset finding an inexpensive unit significantly if you have to spend a significant amount on servicing it routinely.
Compare brands to find the best value for your budget. Remember that the extended warranty is optional and you can save money by not getting it. Many small repairs that arise, you may be able to easily troubleshoot and fix yourself. The same applies to the routine maintenance that maybe as simple as flushing out the fluids, replacing them and replacing the necessary filters.
Many new models are on the market, some of which have smaller space constraints, are made of lighter weight materials and are eco-friendly when they need to be disposed of. Choosing the right inexpensive air conditioner can leave your central air in the off position all summer long and create great savings for you.
