Tiling a surface is easiest way to give neat and enhanced look to that surface. Tiling is the best option for the surface which often gets wet and damp like in the kitchen and bathroom. Besides tiling on the walls, floor tiling is a popular method of flooring. Tiling is one of the trickiest jobs. It is better when done by professionals.
Let us share some useful tips about tiling.
First important task is to select perfect tiles. Tiles are available in various colours, sizes, shapes, patterns and texture. While selecting the tiles for a particular area, set your preferences about colour, shape, size and texture. You can select the colour and pattern of the tiles which match the theme and décor of the room.
While purchasing tile for the floors, ensure that they are not too slippery. For walls you can purchase any kind of tiles. For small and darker rooms, you can opt for larger and natural colour tiles to get a feeling of spaciousness.
Usually the thickness of wall tiles is less than the thickness of floor tiles. You can not use a wall tile on floor but can use floor tiles on the walls. If you are tiling both floors and walls in an area, first cover floor and then the walls with tiles.
Always purchase few extra tiles, in case you run short of tiles while actual tiling takes place. Tiles may break during tiling and you can replace those damaged tiles. In future also, you may get a damaged tile in a plumbing process. In that case, these extra tiles come handy.
Different boxes of tiles may have slight difference in the shade. To avoid this difference to be apparent on the walls, mix and shuffle all the tiles, before tiling.
Look for the pattern in the tiles and lay the tiles accordingly otherwise it will look awkward.
A bathroom can be sealed and made damp proof by tiling top to bottom. A tiler and the quality of tiles play a major role in ensuring the efficient job of tiling.
If you are going for DIY tiling, make sure to have all kinds of tiling tools with you. Measure the area to be tiled and calculate the number of tiles required.
Ceramic tiles are the best option for bathrooms. They are hard wearing and do not let the dampness pass through. They are easy to clean and inexpensive compared to other textured tiles.
For floors, it is advisable to use non slippery tiles. You can go for unglazed tiles which have rough texture and are perfect for bathroom floors. Quarry tiles and terracotta tiles, are the examples of unglazed tiles. The only thing is they need regular cleaning as they gather grease very quickly.
