Fuse box is a metal box which houses the incoming electrical service. It controls the circuits to different locations in the house. There is a cover over the box for the safety and there are fuses in the box which give protection against overcurrent. There are threaded sockets in the fuse box which carry the fuse.
There are times when you face some problems with the fuse box. In that case, you either have to repair it or replace it. If you are upgrading the wiring system of your home or you need to install more wiring for extension, it becomes essential to replace the fuse box. Remember - you should always call an electrician to do this job as the task is challenging and requires proper knowledge and experience. Let me only introduce you some most important stages of this process.
To replace a fuse box, you will need a new fuse box (obviously), fuses, grounded mat and tools.
To understand the basic configuration of a new fuse box, the amperage of the whole electrical system at your home should be determined.
The first step for replacing the fuse box is disconnecting the existing fuse box from the electric meter of your home. It will stop the power supply in the fuse box. Electric meter can be there inside the fuse box. One has to be sure that electricity supply has been shut off. It is very important to be careful about it.
The front panel of the box is usually held by the four screws. It should be removed in order to have access to fuses and wires inside. Professional electrician uses special grounded tools so don’t try to do anything yourself there. All the fuses should be removed carefully. If you are replacing the fuse box with breaker box, discard them otherwise retain to replace them.
All the wires should be removed from their respective fuse terminals. Avoid over manipulation of the wires as it may damage them. Also all the wires should be properly labelled and placed in perfect order as they would be easily recognized while re-installing. You will need these wires in the future. Now, the new box should be installed according to all the electrical safety requirements.
