Fragments are result from creating or deleting files and folders, installing new software or downloading files from Internet and so on. More fragments are piling in the disk, slower computer inputting and outputting performance becomes. Generally, disk fragments are divided into two types: file fragment and available space fragments.

File fragments are produced by deleting or moving the files. If they are not restored continuously but separately in the disk, it will take excessive time for disk head to move among different points in the disk when reading those dispersed files. If such thing continues to happen, it can slow disk and computer performance for sure. This is the main reason that your system has to spend more time in reading or starting computer.

Available space of disk is those you have not used. In the ideal situation, such space should be continuous and available, but if they are divided into fragments, it is not good news for the disk. Space available fragments mean that files spaces are dismembered into many pieces so the disk head has to search for available spaces back and forth and then write files. What is worse, if the space available fragments are larger than that of disk you want to write in, it is probably to increase the number of file fragments.
