High blood pressure or hypertension is a condition that is continuously growing around the world. Hypertension is a condition where the pressure exerted by the blood over the walls of the vessels is over 120/80mmHg. Hypertension can cause serious damage to several organs including: heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, and more. High blood pressure tend to affect more elder people, people who are overweight and people who smoke and abuse alcohol. Cigarettes are especially dangerous because they have nicotine a substance that contracts the blood vessels increasing the pressure of the blood. There are several ways to lower your blood pressure; one way of doing it is with calcium.
Calcium is a very important nutrient used in preventing many diseases such as osteoporosis and depression. When calcium is ingested combined with the appropriate nutrients; it helps to develop the body. When the body is not getting enough calcium, it can cause a wide variety of effects in the body like: muscles cramps, dry skin and brittle nails. Other effects from the lack of calcium are kidney stones, hypertension and miscarriages. Calcium is necessary in order for the heart to work correctly. Calcium ions help to strengthen the heart in order to be able to pump blood more efficiently. There is a group of drugs called calcium channel blockers that supposedly are used to lower blood pressure by limiting the calcium that can access the heart.
In theory limiting the amount of calcium that gets into the heart it lowers the effort of heart beating reducing blood pressure. These drugs however cannot lower the chance of suffering heart diseases after experiencing a heart attack. They also cannot protect organs like the kidney from suffering damage from hypertension. Heart failures can also worsen as a side effect of this type of drug because the heart will pump less blood to the body.
Research shows that in order for the calcium to be effective in lowering the blood pressure it has to be ingested as a part of a diet rich in calcium. Calcium can be obtained easily from green vegetables like: cabbage, spinach and broccoli. Other natural sources of calcium are fruits like grapefruit and oranges. Healthy eating habits are very helpful in treating most diseases which is why a change in life style must be the first step toward treating any health condition.
