A platform bed gives you the opportunity to make a small room look larger very easily. Most people do not realize the amount of space that their bed takes up and, when working with a small space, expanding the room through the creative use of furniture can be a great benefit. When you are selecting your bed, you may want to include storage space in the platform so that you do not need a dresser or wardrobe for your room.
The difference between a platform bed and standard bed is it's compactness. These beds are made to support a mattress without the usual foundation or box springs. This makes the bed sit much closer to the ground, but the mattress receives firm support from the slats or solid paneling that makes up the bottom of the bed frame.
You may also hear about "loft" beds. This is another name for platform beds. The reason they were originally called loft beds is because they were designed for the low ceilings and small rooms found in lofts that were often turned into bedrooms by families. The bed sits low enough that it makes it ideal for rooms that have low ceilings.
When storage is needed in the room, the beds can be made with storage built into the head and footboards. This is very popular in small living space that requires extra storage but is limited on areas to place storage cabinets. An individual will find that the contemporary style bed also has a microfiber or leather fabric covering that matches any room decor nicely. The headboard can easily act as a backrest when you want to relax and sit on the bed.
To achieve a more traditional look, a mission style bed is a perfect choice. This bed is made with all of the classic features of the mission style, but sits close to the floor and features delicate scrollwork on the frame and headboards. This bed adds warmth to a room and gives it the classic features of a traditional bedroom without using the space that would be required from a bigger bed.
A minimalist look in a room is very easy to achieve with the clean lines of the contemporary bed design. These beds have beautiful and sleek lines created in beautiful neutral tones. The beds are normally made from wood or metal and are becoming very popular in small rooms. These beds reflect the classic designs of modern European styling and have geometric lines that are bold and create an art piece in the room.
If your primary decorating medium in your room will be bright and bold fabrics, you will find the delightful Japanese and Asian beds an excellent choice. These beds are designed in to replicate the Tatami mats used in Asian design. The bedding that is selected brings the bed and room to life with your choice of color and fabric.
