Solo advertising a very popular form of online email ads, firstly because people can "use or borrow" others' list if they don't yet have their own opt-in list, and the second reason is that it is effective, and cheap.
Today I would like to show you how I am using solo advertising (credit based) to "steal other people's email list legally. These tactics are usually free and very effective. Your aim here is not to sell your stuff (remember, people usually buy from people they know) but to get those interested on your own list. Later on, when you built up the trust and they are looking forward to receiving your emails, it will be much easier to sell them something upon recommendation. Most people make a big mistake here, they are trying to sell to people who don't know them yet. Now, I am not saying here that you should go back to the "old school method" and try to get your friends and family to sign up under you, but trust and respect is a very important aspect when it comes to making a commitement.
Long ago this was the main purpose of ad exchanges, FFA pages, which are dead by now, and submitting your site on an FFA site is actually doing more harm than good regarding to your Google ranking.
Then came credit based safelists, they worked absolutely fine for a couple of years, but basically by now around less than 1% of them is delivering real results. It basically depends on the credits needed to post your ad that how many people will open your email. If it is enough for them to open 10 emails a day and they get 1000 there is very little chance that anyone will read your emails.
The only thing you have to consider is that you are likely to get loads of emails, the most recommended email service is Google. Using Gmail enables you to delete emails quickly, organize and label different emails, and still it doesn't bounce. Sometimes if your email address bounces you get deleted automatically, these sites are really keen on delivery rates.
