Drinking too much alcohol can be a reason behind weight gain. A man who takes two drinks a day and a woman who takes one drink a day are classified as moderate drinker. Some studies have found that alcohol is good for health, for those who are moderate drinker. Alcohol reduces risk of heart disease and lowers the risk of diabetes, when it is consumed in a certain limit. But when over intake can lead to health problems, obesity as one in the list.
Alcohol and Calories
People are able to maintain their body weight, if their body can burn a sufficient amount of calories. But if body is not able to burn calories a person consumes per day, then body starts accumulating fat. High quantity intake of alcohol like beer, rum, wine, whiskey add calories to diet, so it can be a reason of obesity or weight gain. Many of people don’t know how much calories they intake during drinking. A glass of red or white wine (3.5 oz) contains 70-75 calories, a can of beer (12 oz) contains 135-145 calories and 1.5 oz whiskey contains 97 calories in it.
Effect of Alcohol on Women
The way in which women’s body reacts to alcohol is different than men’s body. Apart from weight gain in men and women, alcohol can lead to other health troubles in women. Drinking more than 3 glasses of wine a day can increase the probability of breast cancer. A woman, who drinks a lot, reduces the chances to conceive. Pregnant women must avoid intake of alcohol completely because it can harm her unborn child.
Alcohol and Appetite
Excessive intake of alcohol does not suppress appetite but it stimulates the appetite of a person, so it increases the intake of food while drinking. Many people like to combine alcohol intake with the food that contain lots of fat. As we all know, fat contains lots of calories, thus it contributes a lot in weight gain.
How to Avoid Weight Gain with Alcohol
It is hard for a person to control the intake of his/her favorite drink. If people drink a full glass of water between their drinks, it would help them to avoid too much drinking as well as avoid the chances of next day hangover. People should avoid high calorie drinks; it would reduce the chance of weight gain. People should also avoid drinking empty stomach. They should have healthy food before going to drink, in this way they can reduce their intake of alcohol and it would also lessen the harmful effects of alcohol.
Self control is very important if a person want to reduce obesity. Excessive intake of alcohol causes many severe diseases like cancer, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, nervous disorders, malnutrition, depression, anxiety, kidney and liver disease. This is why it’s important to limit your alcohol intake. Moderation can be a solution of this; drinking in moderation will definitely help you limit weight gain.
