All types of stationary bikes provide a low impact workout that many feel is an advantage over treadmill exercise. But in the fitness industry, the debate continues over which equipment burns more calories. There is evidence on both sides of the issue, but many people agree that to provide a complete workout a stationary bike should have dual action to optimize weight loss and heart health. Many feel the pumping of the arms adds significantly to the effectiveness of any workout.
A study conducted by the Nordic Track company found that young, healthy people burned the most calories on treadmills and ski machines. Participants used a variety of exercise machines and went through various workouts designed to test cardio response and overall fitness. People burn an average of about 750 calories per hour on a treadmill, while the same user will probably burn about 550 calories per hour on an exercise bike.
Before deciding that this one study makes the treadmill the best choice for exercise equipment, consider a few other benefits and results. One of the key benefits cited by experienced bike users is less stress on knees, ankles and feet than with treadmills and walking/running. Basically, a stationary bike provides exercise that reduces impact on these areas.
With all this in mind, it is probably best not to get caught up in which bike burns more calories. The key is finding an exercise bike you will enjoy riding, so that you not only begin with enthusiasm but continue your fitness program long enough to really see results.
One of the most important factors in the calorie-burning discussion is type of resistance and levels of resistance available on various bikes. There are direct tension bikes that offer manual adjustment of resistance; air- resistance designs on which the airflow of a fan blade provides resistance; and magnetic resistance exercise bikes. This is the most sophisticated design, using magnetic current to create and track the resistance. These bikes generally allows for a greater variety of workout levels. (Magnetic resistance is usually viewed as the best option because it tends to be quieter and provides a more even feel when pedaling.)
Most exercise bikes above those in the rock-bottom price range will provide information on speed, distance traveled, and time of the workout. More sophisticated models will also track total calories and fat burned, resistance level, heart rate and program mode. It really depends on your personal preferences whether you choose a bike with 10 preset programs and an ultra high tech computer display or one with just a simple display. You are smart enough to know how to eat a little better and become more active. If you are honest with yourself, you will choose the proper bike, use it over an extended period and burn plenty of calories in the process.
