When planning any painting and decorating work there are 5 key aspects you should consider. A knowledge of these simple tips can mean the difference between the perfect redecoration and a house from hell!
- Colour Scheme.
Your colour scheme should be chosen very carefully, specific colours can work extremely well regardless of whether they are complimentary, such as mixed pastel shades, or highly contrasting, as in the case of dark greys and vivid greens.
When selecting furniture and decorations to go with the painting work, always consider the golden ratio - redecorating work always seems to look best when the main colour is used in about 60% of the room, with 30 to 40% of the secondary colour and up to 10% of an accent colour. Soft furnishings, such as pillows, rugs and throws, or lighting make ideal accent pieces.
- Lighting
Natural lighting can make a huge difference to the perception of space in a room, large windows and skylights give any room a light and airy feel - to maximise the effect, be sure to use light colours, or be brave and go for that vibrant paint you've always wanted!
Many homes in London suffer from poor natural lighting, so good internal lights are a must. For the best effect it is recommended that you attempt to create a triangle of light in the centre of the room - 3 lighting sources around the outside of the room will achieve this beautifully. Large houses in London with high ceilings will benefit from bold vivid colours, or very pale pastels. Smaller rooms will look best painted in extremely light colours, creams or white to maximise the feeling of space.
- Individual Style
The most important aspect to any painting and decorating project - know what you like, and work to realise it! If you're a great art deco fan then go with your heart and accept no compromises. A good painting and decorating company will be able to help you achieve your dream home should you require any help. If you're unsure of what style you really want for your home, it often helps to think of your most loved possession or artwork - if you collect Japanese memorabilia then you may wish to consider an oriental style to your room.
- Contrasting Textures
We see contrasting textures so often that it usually goes unnoticed, however a redecoration without texture consideration will look lifeless and dull. A simple throw over a wood floor adds depth and character, highly polished metal fittings contrast fantastically with matt paint. Enjoy experimenting with varieties of texture and watch your house come to life!
Lines and curves can also create a fascinating interplay around your home - be wary of making a room too square, or too round! Try offsetting the natural straight lines of the walls with a curved mirror, or using a rounded vase to soften the bulk of a cabinet.
- Size Matters
Often a room can become stunted by too many low items and furnishings resulting in bare looking walls, to create a balance and harmony try hanging pictures or mirrors above a sofa. Use shelves or a wall mounted television to create the impression of height above a low chest.
And never forget - If in doubt, speak to a professional!
