If your wood patio furniture has started to look old and depleted, you do not need to throw it out of burn it in your fireplace. There are ways to revitalize the furniture to make it look brand new again. No matter how beat up your wood furniture is, you can surely refinish it to make it look great. You will save money over buying a new set of furniture. Refinishing patio furniture takes a few steps and a little time, but it is well worth doing.
First you will need to clean the furniture. Try not to use soap while doing this. Your best bet is to just use the water from a garden hose. If you use a pressure washer, some water will get stuck inside the wood and will take weeks to dry out. If your furniture is really gross, use small amounts of deck cleaner along with water.
Once your furniture is clean and dry, use some sandpaper to sand all of the furniture. Do this until the old stain is removed from it. Start with 180 grit sandpaper and move to 220 grit paper as you are nearing the end of the process. This will leave a more consistent color on the furniture.
Now it is time to stain the furniture. Use a wood stain that is similar in color to your old stain. Use a cotton rag to apply the stain to the furniture. Once this layer is dry, apply some polyurethane to the furniture to seal ti from the weather. Now you are done, left with fresh, new furniture.
The best way to keep your furniture from needing to be re-stained in the first place is by protecting it under a patio cover. A patio cover acts as a layer between your furniture and the sun, so that the sun will not strip it of its colors and it will not rot from exposure to rain. Your furniture will stay in great condition for years.
