There are quite a number of window types that are suited for homes. We will explore some of the most popular types used in homes today.
i) The Double Hung Window
The Double Hung Window is a very popular type of window used in many homes. It is made of 2 independently movable sashes that can slide up or down in their own independent grooves. When the top and bottom sashes are in their appropriate places, the window stays closed. Moving one of the sashes to the other position opens the window. This effectively allows for one half of the window space to be open at any given time. Double Hung Windows are easy to maintain and are durable making them very popular.
ii) Replacement Slider Windows
Replacement Slider Windows are very similar to double hung windows expect for the fact that sashes slide horizontally instead of vertically. The number of sashes can also be more than two. The sashes can be removed from the grooves from inside, which make it easy for cleaning and maintenance.
iii) Casement Windows
Casement Windows are popular for their simplistic design and looks. With just a simple frame and a hinge, the window swings open to let air and light into the room. The simple design of the casement window makes it easy to install and maintain.
iv) The Picture Window
The Picture Window is one of the most simple types of windows used in homes today. It just consists of a frame and a fixed piece of glass to allow light in from the outside. The glass can be plain to allow a unhindered view of the exterior. It can also be frosted for privacy and elegance.
v) Bay and Bow Windows
Bay and Bow Windows project outwards from the plane of the wall on which they are installed, giving a more expanded view of the outdoors from the inside. The Bay Window normally consists of three or more windows, while a Bow Window typically consists of four or more windows forming a curved projection outside the wall.
vi) Garden Windows
Garden Windows are mostly installed in kitchens to brighten up the space and to let nature inside. The air flow is controlled by the use of end vents. In some Garden Windows, a glass shelf is included as an optional add-on. This can be used to grow potted plants indoors while providing them with adequate sunlight. The Garden Window can be used as a mini kitchen garden.
