If you are going to do something, you may as well do it properly. And if you’ve decided to tackle kitchen renovation, then you may want to know how to avoid common mistakes so that you can get the job done properly. Kitchen renovations are costly and time consuming, rather know what to avoid, than have to live in regret.
The most common mistake people make is poor or no planning. Kitchen renovation is complex – you have a lot of things to consider, a lot of options to choose from, and a lot of room for error. If you want to avoid the most common mistakes, make sure you plan well. Start with your budget – how much can you afford to spend, and stick to it strictly. When you start looking at all the options you have available in kitchen renovations these days, it’s easy to get carried away. And while it’s true that a well-designed kitchen will add to the value of your home, it is not the only factor – so don’t use that to justify splurging beyond what you can afford. Kitchen renovation is very pricy – just getting the basics right will cost plenty, so don’t get carried away with non-essential items.
And while we are on the subject of planning, budgeting is not your only concern. You need to look at all the factors – and prioritise so you are sure you know how to avoid the most common mistakes. Kitchen cabinets are expensive, and they will probably account for half your budget, so make sure you find ones that are sturdy, will last long, look good, are easy to maintain. They are also costly to replace, so you don’t want to make a mistake here. What do you use your kitchen for? Does your family eat in the kitchen, are you a gourmet cook, what is the size of your kitchen, what kind of a design do you want for your kitchen, and does it fit in with the rest of the house are all important questions to answer before you even begin your kitchen renovations, because you may have to live with the consequences of your mistakes and oversights for a very long time.
If you know how to avoid common mistakes, you can save yourself a lot of trouble down the line. Another common mistake people make not properly vetting their contractor. This can be disastrous – you won’t be the first person who has learned this the hard way. Get references, and check on them, make sure your contractor is insured and qualified, and be clear about your budget, and what you expect from him, or your kitchen renovation experience may leave a very nasty taste in your mouth.
Another common mistake to avoid is to go with the latest wacky trend in kitchen design. What looks great in a magazine, or catalogue might not translate as well to your home, especially if the rest of your décor doesn’t match. When you are renovating your kitchen, pick simple, classic designs that won’t date, get on your nerves after a couple of months, or clash with the rest of your home. Again – kitchen renovations are expensive and time-consuming. You can’t easily update your kitchen on a whim, so choose carefully.
If you are reading an article on ‘how to avoid common mistakes in kitchen renovations’, congratulations – you are already ahead of the pack. You realise that there are pitfalls involved, and that kitchen renovation is not as simple as some contractors, designers and home décor magazines make it seem. It’s not all bad though – if you avoid common mistakes, and do your research, kitchen renovation can be an uplifting experience that results in your dream kitchen. It just takes a little care and planning to ensure the dream doesn’t turn into a nightmare!
