Located in South East England is the sprawling county of Devon – one of the best places for a holiday. Devon has so much to offer such as shopping, beach activities, nature, history and cultural exploration, fun attractions for the entire family and super accommodation options. The county of Devon comprises of many interesting cities and towns, some of which are highlighted below.
Exeter
This is the ceremonial capital of Devon which is located on the River Exe. It is a historical city and holds many notable religious buildings such as the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and St Mary Steps. It also contains secular buildings such as the ruins of Rougemont Castle and the oldest municipal building in England still in use – The Guildhall.
Plymouth
This is the second city in Devon, and is built between the mouths of the rivers Plym and Tamar. The city lies on the coast and has ferry links to France and Spain. Two noteworthy attractions at Plymouth are The Royal Citadel and The National Marine Aquarium. The latter is England’s largest aquarium, housing over 400 species of underwater creatures.
English Riviera (Torbay)
This is an east facing bay and natural harbour, located between the cities of Exeter and Plymouth. It boasts a mild climate and gorgeous beaches, and is surrounded by three main towns – Torquay in the north, Paignton in the centre and Brixham in the south. Geopark status was granted to Torbay in 2007 – it is now one of eight parks in UK. The area is rich in varied geology depicting several geological periods.
Torquay
One of the towns situated near the English Riviera, Torquay is a popular seaside resort. It was the home of Agatha Christie, who lived most of her life there. Torquay has some excellent beaches on it coastline – the most famous include Maidencombe, Watcombe, Oddicombe and Babbacombe beaches.
Dartmouth
This is a very popular tourist destination, as it is set on the estuary of the River Dart. Dartmouth lies in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is of great importance as a deep water port for sailing vessels. The town is dominated by the Royal Navy's officer training college and all officers of the Royal Navy, are trained there. Other notable places here are Dartmouth Castle and Kingswear Castle, which protect the narrow mouth of the Dart as well as the many other historic buildings around the town.
