In Europe's 15th century it was used in connection with warfare. It was also well known in the ancient Olympic Games in Greece. Today's mixed martial arts (MMA) is a combination of a number of martial arts which compete against one another also known as cage fighting.
Jiu Jitsu combat was a highly regarded Eastern Asian fighting style and those who developed the style are highly regarded. The Far East is actually what most people think of when discussing this subject as movies usually have an oriental star performing. People who have perfected this style of combat are called martial artists.
Martial arts come under a wide range of different types of combat, regardless of the country of its origin. Things such as wrestling, fighting, karate, judo, sparring and so forth fit under this heading. History of these kinds of sports goes back to the 1st millennium BC in Europe and Asia and has been embellished upon through the centuries.
It was during World War II (South Korea area), and the Korean War that the American service men, serving in those areas, were introduced to jujutsu, karate and judo. When they returned these disciplines caught on very rapidly and, eventually, were incorporated into what is called Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). It is MMA that combines boxing, wrestling, jujitsu, karate, kickboxing, muay thai, judo and other grappling and hitting styles into one competition.
With evidence of the effectiveness of this kind of self-defense, it has been adapted by the military in their training program. The mixed martial art competition employs contestants using different techniques involving sparring and other moves. With sparring there is no written down set of rules by any organization with the exception regarding actual contact. This is divided medium and full contact.
Medium contact means that contact between the two contestants can be restricted to no punching while on the ground. There is, of course a referee, and judges who add and subtract points. Hitting some parts of the body is forbidden and in some competitions the fighters are required to wear protective equipment.
'Full' contact is the other type of this kind of competition. In this case, full force is given to the blows with the aim of knocking the opponent out or having them give up. This type of competition is often seen in professional fighting bouts. There are a large number of mixed martial arts organizations that have specific contact rules.
There are a number of well known fighting styles in the mixed martial arts category. For example, Judo has a hip toss and other throws, Mau Thai uses hands, shins, knees and elbows with kick and knee-elbow moves, Jiu-Jitsu uses a guard position with various submission holds. Then there is Western Boxing with the uppercut and hook, jab and cross. There is also Submission and Collegiate wrestling. These are common styles used in mixed martial arts competition.
Not simply is it very important for fighters to purchase MMA gear in the very first place but to know when to replace old MMA gear. Old MMA gear might not soak up moisture and could possibly cause chaffing and may perhaps restrict your striking range.
