Does your life seem like a syndicated sitcom where your bed time partner always ends the night by saying the infamous catch phrase, "Stop snoring?" Sure snoring makes a lot of people laugh. Snoring is not exactly on your Doctor’s check list for health problems. Even children are taught that snoring means sleep. So why would you think your life was anything but innocent cinematic scenes? Because right now your sleep apnea is a horror film in the making.
So you think you are "normal" for snoring. Is it normal to have something monstrous, dangerous and life threatening inside you? Like a werewolf, you change when the moon comes out. Unbeknownst to you, your body suffocates you to the point where you stop breathing sometimes up to 100 times a night. It’s eerie how you cannot remember this, but apparently it’s getting worse. Now you are relying on self preservation or your partner to save you. Frightened yet?
If you think your snoring is only affecting you, you’re wrong. Mysteriously, your partner has caught the same strange insomnia, and you are both powerless against its relentless fatigue. Still, you think, losing a little sleep won’t kill you. Actually it will. Send in the statistics.
Apparently individuals with untreated apnea, OSA are about 4 times more susceptible to strokes and are 3 times more susceptible to heart disease. (National Sleep Foundation) What happens is that when your airways get blocked, your heart speeds up to try and get it to work again. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that each year drowsy driving "is responsible for at least 100,000 automobile crashes, 40,000 injuries, and 1,550 fatalities." (National Sleep Foundation)
Sleep apnea is known to affect ones concentration, and can easily put you asleep during normal events like daily activities, conversations, or as they said driving.
If you are not covering your eyes in fear right now from this article, then here comes something even scarier. Have you ever heard of someone dying from snoring? That seems like an urban myth, a camp fire story, or a bed time tale to tell children before they get their tonsils out, but it’s real. Apparently Reggie White of the Green Bay Packers died about 2 years ago from sleep apnea, and he is not the only one. Declaring deaths by snoring is not exactly the most exciting news worthy material out there, but if you look you will find it.
So before you become a screen play for the next big thriller, you might want to change the channel to an infomercial about how to stop snoring. This will definitely improve your ratings with your partner, and keep you around for a few more seasons.
