We know massage to be effective in reducing everyday stress, relieving physical muscle tension, improving the immune system and inducing a feeling of relaxation. Now, massage has also been shown to promote the release of natural oxytocin.
Oxytocin is a hormone found in both sexes; but, it's effects are more prevalent in women. It is produced in the brain; but, also in the ovaries, blood vessels and in the heart. Women experience enhanced effects because of their greater levels of estrogen, which is very receptive to oxytocin.
It was discovered in the early 1900's and found to speed up the birthing process and promote the expulsion of breast milk. Crossing the placenta, maternal oxytocin reaches the fetal brain and induces a switch in the action of neurotransmitter GABA from excitatory to inhibitory on fetal cortical neurons. This silences the fetal brain for the period of delivery and reduces its vulnerability to hypoxic damage.
Recently, the chemical effects have been found to influence social behavior in human bonding. It may be involved in the formation of trust, empathy and generosity in personal relationships because it reduces anxiety and fears.
Additionally, studies have found that oxtocin counters the effects of cortisol, a stress hormone, which when overproduced can lead to high blood pressure clinical depression and lowered immune function. The benefits and effectiveness of natural oxytocin include reducing anxiety by evoking feelings of contentment, calmness and security, particularly with your mate or child. Makes a lot of sense considering where it is produced!
So, natural release of oxytocin through massage can be beneficial in both psychological and physiological ways. Whether you are an expectant mother, a new mother, or experiencing a great deal of mental, emotional or physical stress, know that massage can help put you back on the path to wellness. And, know that massage also increases the oxytocin level in the therapist. Which is why ' I knead your knots & your knots need me!'
