We'll look at perspective, eye contact, composition and finally getting your subject out of their comfort zone. By the end you'll have the knowledge to go out there and add the wow factor to your portraits.
First, let's look at perspective. Most portraits are taken from eye level, but by altering it to below, above or even at floor level, your subject will come to life in a way that is certain to create interest.
Next, let's look at eye contact. The direction of the subject's eyes can change the image drastically. Most portraits have the subject looking down the lens, but having them look off camera or into space can create intriguing results. We as the viewers wonder what it is off camera that is making them laugh or smile, the key is to take an image of the subject that is just as interesting.
Now, let's look at composition. Experiment with composition to have your subject in one of the thirds. Either side or dead center will certainly produce interesting results in your portraits.
Finally, let's look at getting your subject out of their comfort zone. If the subject is a business person, for example, having them reveal a lighter, fun side can create a great portrait. An example of this would be having the person move or jump in the photo, which will produce a more interesting than normal corporate portrait.
