Okay – so you have chosen your new boiler and arranged to have it installed, so what should you do when the engineer arrives to make sure the boiler installation goes as smoothly as possible? Here are a few tips to help you:
-
Firstly, and most importantly check that they are who they say they are. If you don’t know them personally then make sure that they have a name badge, and if you need to, contact the company they work for to check. No professional engineers will mind you taking the time to make sure. Also confirm that they are Gas Safe Registered.
-
Make sure that you have cleared the area around the boiler and any other parts of the house they will be working in. Remember - the engineers need to be working on the boiler, not spending their time shifting your furniture. Even though you would expect a reputable company to help if you are stuck, it is not really the best use of their time. They will most likely need access to the area around the boiler and the airing cupboard, if you have one.
-
Make sure that any pets are out of the way. In particular, make sure that the engineer does not have to worry about dogs and cats escaping onto the road. Again, most engineers will be fine with your pets, but they will need to be in and out of the house and if your puppy bolts for freedom every time they open the door, it is going to make things very stressful for everyone!
-
Make sure that you have told your neighbours that the engineers will be there, particularly if parking or noise is an issue in your area.
-
Try if possible to make sure that the engineer can park as close to your house. An old boiler is fairly heavy, and the closer the engineer can park, the better.
-
Try to find out where the mains water tap is, so the engineer does not have to spend time hunting for it.
-
Finally, if you have been happy with their service, keep their details and pass them on to your friends and family. A reliable boiler installer is always a useful contact, and we all appreciate a personal recommendation.
