Let's start with the first organization and declutter tip. Consider "floor-to-ceiling" storage. Even though I strive to have a clutter free home. I realize that a certain amount of "stuff" actually makes a house a home. So, I am careful not to throw out items that we actually use, even if they are board games that we may only play every couple of months. A home just is not a home without such things as board games.
The family room is usually the best place to store these types of items. It is a good idea to have a shelving unit that is big enough to house these items, as well as other items like Christmas ornaments and decorations.
Consider placing items that are barely used, but still essential, on the top shelf. That way they will be out-of-the-way, but still there when you want use them. On the lower shelves, place items that are used on a more regular basis or items that may need to be used by shorter members of the family.
You may also want to consider having a specific shelf to store books that have been checked out of the library or movies that have been rented from the video store. That way you can keep track of items that need to be returned in a timely manner.
Another great storage idea is to use a trunk. At one time, I had a trunk that also doubled as a coffee table. I used it to store fleece throws and extra pillows for the couch. My husband used it as a place to rest his feet while he relaxed and watched TV.
An armoire (wardrobe closet) is also a great piece of furniture for storage. It has both drawers and shelves for storing various items. I use mine to store magazines, craft materials, and coloring books for my nephews. It also has doors on it, that can be closed to keep these items out of sight. This makes the room appear instantly more organized and clutter free.
