Installing alarm systems for the home can be complicated and expensive, which is why it is a good idea to determine your security needs prior to conferring with alarm companies. Survey your house and decide on which doors and windows need to be integrated into the house alarm systems. Then look for the most convenient locations for your keypads and control panel. You should place keypads near the doors that you use the most and place the control panel in an easily accessible place in your house. The control panel is what commands the system, and you can program that system through those keypads. Some control panels allow you to speak directly to the security company. The control panel must be strategically located because it will determine how far the wiring will have to be routed or how far any wireless system have to link up with sensors based on its distance from doors and windows.
When choosing an effective security system, go for a control panel that efficiently monitors the different sectors in your house, like specific doors and windows. Most basic systems available in the market can handle at least eight zones (a zone is an equivalent of a single door or window), and you can also use expansion modules to make your system handle more zones.
Your family’s lifestyle should also be taken into account when considering your residential alarm system. If you tend to get up at midnight for some snacks or have pets, then you should choose motion detectors built to handle such circumstances. You may also want to consider using a system that can be activated by a key fob panic button. Look for systems that are compatible with the various sensors involved, like fire-protection, carbon monoxide, combustible-gas detectors, water detectors and anti-freeze low temperature switches.
Wireless systems are great in situations where the routings of hard-wired systems might be impractically too long. Wired systems will require drilling holes in walls. If that seems too messy for you, then go for a wireless system; just make sure that it can effectively work on the farthest zones in your house.
Whatever alarm system you finally decide to choose, make sure that it is user-friendly. Simple procedures for entering codes in keypads are vital so that members in the family can learn and appreciate the system quickly. Remember that convenience prompts anyone to use the system well at all times.
