The decision to purchase new replacement windows (for homes or commercial buildings), has great potential to pay-off with the passing of each day. If a home-owner chooses to have their windows replaced, the home’s value and profile will increase. Further, if a home-owner is looking to sell, their profit, or prospective thereof, may also rise.
Replacement windows are able to increase in-home comfort, reduce energy costs (a small step to favor our environment), and cut maintenance expenses. New and more efficient windows – ranging from wood to vinyl – can prove a worthy investment.
Glass, of which the majority of a window is made of, has a large impact on energy use and effect. With increasing technological advancements, an array of glass options are offered. Glass is now coated with Low-E and filled with argon – leading to great reduction in energy loss.
Properly sealed and coated, double and triple-pane windows are better protected against energy loss than a single pane. Since the introduction of the double pane window, low emissivity coating represents one of the greatest advancements in glass and window production. The primary advantage of low emissivity is that it contains elements that have the power to radiate something, esp. light, heat, or radiation. Heat is reflected from the warm side of the glass outward.
During winter, Low-E glass retains the warm air on the inside of a home, and keeps the cold from entering. The unforgiving heat of summer is reflected out of the home. This, in result, can have a significant impact on the amount of energy used and consumed. Such factors should always come into consideration when purchasing new windows.
To further strengthen a windows energy efficiency, gases such as krypton may also be added. The specific type of gas used in-between a window’s panes of glass is important. It can have a large impression on both energy efficiency and durability.
Special treatments can be added to the window’s exterior, reducing the frequency of their required cleaning and up-keep. "Higher-End" windows will also help homeowners reduce energy costs and increase savings. The ‘high end’ glass uses a combination of photo catalytic and hydrophilic effects. This so-called "tidy" glass has an invisible, durable and permanent coating of titanium and silicon dioxide. Titanium is able to use the power of the sun’s UV rays, and therefore loosens dirt particles from the window itself. The silicon, on the other hand, causes the glass of the window to be greatly smoother than plain glass. This ensures that rainwater sheets off of the glass cleanly and evaporates as quickly as possible. This, to a great extent, reduces unsightly window spotting and smudge.
Dual-seals, offered in many new windows, keep moisture out and help bond the individual window panes together as a single unit. This, just another ingredient to sustain the life of a window.
As shown, to determine the quality of a window, and to get the most bang-for-your-buck, there are many factors that come into play. Factors that aren’t always common knowledge and apparent to a homeowner. To ensure that the choice of window is of the greatest value, and provides the best benefit, homeowner’s may need to spend some time to research through the decision process.
