Keep Yourself Away From Becoming a Target

Home security is all about taking away opportunities from potential criminals looking for a reason to break into your house. The majority of home break-ins are committed by people who are not professionals. They are simply presented with an opportunity and they do not have the morals not to take it.
If you know this, then you can take steps to ensure that you do not give criminals easy opportunities to steal from you. It is important to stop crime before it starts because once they commit that first crime of breaking in, there is little to keep them from committing more crimes, particularly if they think they can get away with them or if they need to get away themselves.
The first and most obvious action you should take to remove an opportunity from would-be burglars is to always arm your home security system if you have one. If a person is watching your home and knows that you never forget to do this, he or she is less likely to take a chance with your house. In addition, post alarm system stickers in prominent places so criminals know not even to waste their time casing your place.
Any windows that do not have a sensor hooked up to your alarm should be barred or otherwise secured. Always lock your doors, even if you are at home. Unlocked doors and windows are easy for burglars to take advantage of, and will be one of the first access points checked when they are looking for a way in.
Burglars are like gremlins. They hate the light. For this reason, it is to your benefit to install motion-activated security lighting around your property. Most criminals will not take the chance that they will be seen by neighbors or somebody passing by. They would much rather hit a dark house where they can blend in with the shadows. Installing outdoor security lighting will also ensure that you do not come home to a dark house. Again, lighting is the enemy to potential attackers who want to remain concealed when committing their crimes.
Finally, don’t advertise when you purchase an expensive item. Do not simply set the box to that brand new plasma television out with your trash. Either take it to a dumpster off site, or cut it up into smaller pieces that can be placed in black trash bags.
Human nature is such that if an opportunity to make some sort of gain presents itself, it will be exploited to its fullest. Some people can resist an open invitation to take something that’s not theirs if they are given the chance, but others can’t and won’t. Don’t set yourself up to be a victim. Take steps to close the door on criminal opportunity.
