Basic pool chemistry involves two primary chemical substances: chlorine and alkaline. Chlorine disinfects the water; too much of it though will increase the acidity of the water. Adding alkaline into the mix can reduce the acidity of the water. However, the amount of these two chemicals needs to be balanced carefully. Too much alkaline will reduce not just the acidity of the chlorine, but also its effectiveness. Too much chlorine on the other hand, as was mentioned, will increase the acidity of the water, which can irritate the skin and eyes of swimmers and corrode metal pool parts such as pipes and drains.

That is pool chemistry in its most basic sense; there are still some intricacies about it. Chlorine, for one, in its purest form is very toxic. It has actually been used as a weapon in chemical warfare. There are, however, forms of chlorine that are safe enough to be used in swimming pools given that it is handled properly.

The cheapest, most accessible chlorine type that can be used in pools is Gas chlorine. It however, is still very dangerous. One would need special training and equipment in order to handle it properly. Moreover, since it is in a gaseous state, it needs its own special room in order to be stored safely.

Next, the Calcium Hypochlorite is a type of chlorine that has been solidified into pellets. It can still be quite dangerous because it is extremely reactive and may cause fires if not handled properly. It also does not dissolve completely and will leave residue in your pools. It can at least be placed in automatic feeders, unlike gas chlorine, therefore it requires less attention.

Sodium Hypochlorite is chlorine is liquefied form. It does not need to be dissolved therefore it will not leave any residue in your pools. It is also the next cheapest type next to gas chlorine.

Trichloroisocyanuric Acid is another solidified type of chlorine. It is shaped into sticks or tablets. It is highly concentrated, it is stabilized and it completely dissolves in the water. It is quite expensive though as compared to other types.

It is apparent that pool chemistry is not something to play with. Though it can be easy to do, it should always be handled with proper care.
