Acne Treatment: A Perspective from a Dermatologist
Now that dermatologists and medical doctors understand more today about acne than at any point in history, consistent and effective treatment can be prescribed and performed.
But before we discuss a few of the options, let's get a few myths debunked and out of the way.
First, did you know according to dermatologists, that diet plays no role in the treatment of acne?
There have been several illuminating studies conducted by dermatologists which bear that even eating chocolate have not make acne worse. That's rather good news.
Kelp and seaweed, taken in high quantities may help reduce acne, however this is rather impractical.
Exposure to the sun may even the color of the skin, and initially dry the lesions, but several weeks or months after, the lesions will return and only become worse. This has been proven.
A dermatologist will also advise patients not to pick or scratch the pimple, preferring to let them heal on their own. If this kind of manipulation is engaged, scarring is almost a certainty due to it becoming a pustule or papule.
Now that said, a dermatologist has several ways he or she can effectively treat acne.
For instance, a Dermatologist may wish to use orally ingested antibiotics, such as tetracyclines and erythromycin. These work by reducing the inflammation.
Then there are topical agents, meaning medicine that is applied to the skin. Antibiotics can also be topically applied, although they do not work as well as orally ingested ones. Also these antibiotics can stain the skin. Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are another common treatment for acne and are effective.
Face peels are also considered another viable treatment to reduce clogged pores. Dermatologists use topical diluted trichloroacetic acid to conduct a face peel."
A dermatologist has several physical therapies such as surgery. However, there is no guarantee that scarring will not occur. Sometimes a dermatologist will use dermabrasion, resulting in smoother clearer skin, especially if there has been scarring.
As you can see, a dermatologist has a number of options when treating acne. As a dermatologist's patient, you're best served by one who is knowledgable, frequently updated on new technologies and therapies, as well as one who is empathetic and compassionate.
Once you schedule a consult with a dermatologist it's best to discuss all the options and treatments, and the pros and cons of each. And don't hesitate to get a second opinion.
