Thinking of building a swimming pool for your home? It can be a huge, and pretty scary undertaking. It's easy to get overwhelmed by the mass of information that's out there. Before you get too caught up in reading hundreds of pages of pamphlets, guides, and how-to books, take a moment to check out these tips on the mistakes most commonly made by people looking to get a new pool. Hopefully, this information is helpful in getting you off on the right foot and saves you a great deal of time and money!
The Most Common Mistakes in Planning to Build a Swimming Pool
Not checking out the experience level, history, or background of a Contractor: What makes the company you're looking at qualified to build swimming pools? Keep in mind the saying, "If you think the cost of a Professional is high, try hiring an Amateur."
Not asking questions: Don't assume your builder is going to give you an education or is even capable of giving you one, for that matter. The more you know the better buyer you will be - that helps both you and your pool contractor. Do your homework!
Shopping based on price: If a deal seems too good to be true, it usually is! If you shop based on price alone you are almost certainly bound to be disappointed. The bottom line is this - you get what you pay for.
Not reading contracts: Make sure you understand EXACTLY what you are getting into. You want everything to be in writing. It can be very difficult to cancel a contract with many builders after the typical 3-day rescission period has passed. The contract should protect you and your interests as much as the contractor's.
Focusing on the aesthetics and not the mechanicals of the project: Hydraulic design, flow rates, pipe size, pump and filter types, chemical management systems, and many other factors will make a difference in the ability of your swimming pool to stay clean and sanitized.
Shopping over the phone for a pool: You can try this, but it is usually impossible and a total waste of time. Visit the swimming pool contractor or have them come to your home to provide you with an estimate. Visiting a contractor's place of business will tell you a lot about the way the business is run.
Paralysis by analysis: If you get so many estimates for swimming pool construction you become overwhelmed and cannot make a decision. Do your due diligence and get 3 or 4 estimates from reputable swimming pool companies. Then make your decision and go with it.
Assuming swimming pools cost less to build in the wintertime: Many, MANY things go into building a pool, and we are always seeing increases in the costs of materials and labor. Pools don't get cheaper as time goes on, they get more expensive. In fact, building a swimming pool will never be less expensive than it is right now.
Not thinking about safety: Swimming pools can be a great place to relax, exercise, and just enjoy being outdoors. However, they can also be dangerous. Make sure you know what your are requires in safety regulations as far as fences and signage/warnings go. More importantly, make sure you protect yourself and your loved ones.
Shopping like you are buying a factory-line item: Swimming pools are custom construction projects and are built by many individual trade and pool contractors with different standards. All pools are not built the same, unlike any assembly-line product which is manufactured in a factory to preset specifications. Swimming pools are not cookie-cutter projects, they require custom specification.
