How To Choose Your Washing Machine Size

Your washing machine size should be chosen based on a number of attributes so before you buy one, make sure you assess your needs and the requirements of your household.
What should you base your washing machine size on?
- How many people live in your house?
For a large household you will need a large washing machine in order to avoid constant piles of laundry. A larger machine obviously allows you to wash more at once, which is far more convenient for you, and will save you time and energy. However, it isn't necessary to choose the largest model as you'll most likely need to separate your laundry into several loads anyway.
Although a large 11kg appliance may seem like a good investment, remember this washing machine size is suitable for commercial users. So, unless you have the same amount of washing as a B&B or a restaurant, you might want to save your cash and choose a smaller model. 8kg is usually suitable for even the largest households, you can even wash a king sized duvet in there!
One popular 8kg washing machine is the Hotpoint WMD940A. This washing machine comes in a choice of colours; black, aluminium, silver and white to match your other appliances. With its energy efficient A rating, the Hotpoint WMD940A will help drive down your utility bills.
- What do you need to wash?
A family of four consisting of two adults and two children really only requires a 7kg machine. The 7kg washing machine size will accommodate about 35 men's shirts (and double that amount of children's clothes). You will also be able to fit a double duvet into the machine - but don't wash duvets in your own appliance unless it has a specific duvet setting!
If you have easy access to a laundrette and don't mind dragging your duvets there, you probably won't need a larger model. If you'd like the convenience however, choose a larger washing machine size.
- Wash loads per week?
Larger families might find they are continuously washing clothes, especially if they are cleaning school uniforms and play clothes. Most people change their clothes at least once per day so if you find the washing basket piles up (and overflows) very quickly, consider a larger machine. This will reduce the amount of washes you have to do per week.
For households consisting of a single occupant, or a couple you probably won't require a large machine.
