Bourne in Lincolnshire has a number of notable people associated with the town. These people are associated with historic uprisings, the fashion designer who led to the creation of the term 'haute couture', and people associated with contemporary music.
Hereward the Wake, one of the leaders of British resistance to the Norman conquest of England during the eleventh century, was born in the town of Bourne in or around the year 1035. The name Hereward is made of Old English words 'here' for army, and 'ward' for guard. The title 'The Wake' means The Watcher. Hereward the Wake travelled across the Fens in East Anglia to lead opposition to William the Conqueror, who was King of England for three years, from the year 1066 to 1069.
The statesman William Cecil, First Baron Burghley and chief advisor to Queen Elizabeth I, was born in the town of Bourne in the year 1521. He has been portrayed in many novels, TV series and movies about Elizabeth. He was played by the actor Morton Selton in the movie Fire Over England that was released in the year 1937. In the year 1998 he was played by Sir David Attenborough in the movie Elizabeth. The TV series Elizabeth I was screened in the year 2005 in which Lord Burghley was played by Ian McDiarmid.
Charles Frederick Worth was a world famous fashion designer who was born in the town of Bourne in the year 1825. He lived at Wake House in North Street which is now a community centre. Worth produced his designs in Paris, and is celebrated as the godfather of haute couture which is the creation of clothing that is made to measure for an exclusive clientele. The term is now in everyday use, but was originally used to describe Worth's work. Today the term haute couture is a protected name that can only be used by design houses that meet various stringent standards of quality. There is a room dedicated to Worth in the Bourne Heritage Centre.
The auto racing driver and entrepreneur Raymond Mays, born in the year 1899, lived his whole life in the town and put Bourne on the map as a centre for the world of motor racing since the 1930s. He helped to set up English Racing Automobiles (ERA) and British Racing Motors (BRM) which are two of the leading centres for motor racing in the United Kingdom. He set up the workshops for these behind his house in Bourne. There is a room dedicated to Mays at the Bourne Heritage Centre
Blake Fielder-Civil, who was the on-off boyfriend and husband of the pop singer Amy Winehouse, was born in the town in the year 1978. He attended Bourne Grammar School but left at the age of sixteen and went to London where he found work as a video production assistant. During this work he met Amy Winehouse. His on-off relationship with Amy Winehouse has been covered extensively in the tabloid press and other news media.
